land very fertile

banks peninsula in poetry andprose
Edited by Coral Atkinson & David Gregory

With the spread hand of its snug hills and valleys, blue bays and sparkling water, Banks Peninsula on the eastern coast of New Zealand’s South Island is a world removed from the flat monotony of the Canterbury Plains. It is a place of great natural beauty, an area rich in legend and history, territory of the heart.

Land Very Fertile is a collection of poetry and prose about this special region. Drawing from a wide variety of sources, including such New Zealand greats as Ursula Bethell, Denis Glover, James K. Baxter, Ngaio Marsh, Allen Curnow and Maurice Shadbolt, along with many newer voices such as Joe Bennett, Fiona Farrell, Bernadette Hall and James Norcliffe, as well as exciting lesser-known talents, this collection is a landscape of literature, seeking to capture the spirit of a much-loved area.In an engaging mix of style and content the anthology embraces and reflects the peninsula’s unique heritage and charm. It is thematically arranged under the headings Beginnings, Places, People, Work, Holidays, Seasons and Weather, and Endings, and is a book to savour and treasure. Here is something for everyone.

Martin London’s highly evocative photographs speak eloquently of this
lovely place.

In Dust Road Days
Jennifer Barrer

In dust road days
we drove to Camp Bay
just the five of us
in the Ford V8.

The bullet box
held the pav
the thermette
and the bacon and egg pie.
And the rubber dinghy
sat in the boot
with the bait
our togs
and calamine lotion.
